Tanner V. Tanner and Another
Suit for divorce
Mr. Andrews, for the petitioner, said an important witness (Mr. W. J. Cox) had refused to attend on his subpeona.
His Honor— If it has been properly served this will be contempt of Court.
Mr. Andrews— He can be punished, but my case will not speed the better for that. He is an important witness.
His Honor— I cannot keep the Jury waiting, and the parties are not here in the next case. You may withdraw the record or go on.
Mr. Andrews said he would go on. He then stated that Charles Tanner was married to the respondent Clara Rogers at Trinity Church in April. 1847. They lived together for some years, but the woman's conduct became so bad that the petitioner had to separate from her. He furnished a house for her, and allowed her £1 per week, but she sold the furniture and went to live with the co-respondent James Barnes, on his farm, near Hamilton.
The Rev. Richardson Reid produced the Marriage Register of Trinity Church, and read an entry of the marriage of Charles Tanner and Clara Rogers, on the 15th April, 1847. Officiating clergy man, George 'Newenhamham; witnesses, Thomas Skuce and F. Skuce.
Mary Frances Skuce stated that Clara Tanner is her sister. Was present at her marriage, and the signatures in the registry were those of witness's late husband and herself.
Robert Radford, veterinary surgeon, Waterloo Plains, stated that he knew James Barnes, the co-respondent. He had lived at a place called the Scrub Hut, near Hamilton. Mrs. Tanner lived at witness's house for four months four years ago last September. Barnes used to come to the house frequently, and then -Mrs. Tanner went to live with him at the Scrub Hut. It was a cottage of a kitchen and bedroom. Witness had often passed by the Scrub Hut, and dined once at the same table with Barnes and Mrs. Tanner. There was but one bed in the house. Mrs. Tanner remained there 18 months or two years. She then returned to Adelaide, as Mr. Taylor compelled them to remove. Witness had not seen her since.
Bv Mr. Ingleby— While Mrs. Tanner was living at his (witness's) house her husband did not visit her, nor, so far as he knew remit her any money.
By Mr. Andrews— Objected to Barnes addressing her by her Christian name, as he knew she was a married woman. They appeared to be altogether too familiar.
Mr. W. J.Cox was called upon his subpoena.
William Brown, police-constable, stated that he knew Charles Tanner and Clara his wife. Had seen Mrs. Tanner dancing in a public-house in Light-square. Had heard complaints of a house in Moore-street where she resided with another woman. Had seen her in disorderly houses out late with different men, and the worse for drink.
That was the case for the petitioner. His Honor— Mrs. Tanner does not defend, but lets judgment go by default, and the question is whether there is any evidence to go to the Jury against Barnes.
Mr. Andrews thought Radford's evidence was sufficient to go to that Jury.
His Honor— Yes, there is evidence to go to the Jury; it remains to be considered whether it is such as the Court can act upon.
Mr. Andrews addressed the Jury, urging that the facts proved were sufficient to satisfy any reasonable mind that the respondent and co-respondent had lived together in adultery at the Scrub Hut.
Mr. Ingleby addressed the Jury for the co-respondent, maintaining that it was not because a single man employed as servant a woman separated from her husband that a Jury must convict him of having committed adultery with her.
His Honor summed up carefully, and The Jury found, after a short consultation, that James liaines had committed adultery with the respondent Clara Tanner.

August Christian Knabe, died 14 Feb 1903
The death occurred, after a lingering illness extending over 10 years, on Saturday of Mr. August Christian Knabe, of Elizabeth street, Adelaide. He was born at Hamburg Germany, on March 4, 1828, and having lost his parents came to Australia in the ship Stemwerder, arriving on January 12th 1849. His life for the first few years was one of many hardships, until the Victorian diggings were discovered, and with many others from South Australia he decided to seek his fortune over the border. He was however, not very successful. He afterwards went into business in Morphett-street, Adelaide, as mattress and bedding manufacturer, and remained there for 33 years. In 1886 he was obliged, owing to failing health to give up business, and had from that time till his death lived a quiet life. He was connected with the Pirie-street Methodist Church from the day of its opening, 51 years, ago, and with the exception of the last year or two had been a constant attendant. He was of a retiring disposition and never took an active part in public matters. He left a wife, three daughters, and two sons. One son is Mr. J. H. Knabe, of Messrs. Pengelley & Knabe, and the other is Mr. Ernest Knabe. The daughters are Mesdames George Edwards. Jas. Dixon, and Thomas Skuce. At the Pirie street Church last evening fitting reference was made to the death of Mr. Knabe, and the hymn "The Christian's good-night" was sung by the choir.

South Australia the Best
Mr Ernest C Skuse, of Lockleys, who is well known as a horticulturist, returned this week from a tour around the world, in which he was accompanied by his wife and daughter. Mr Skuse's object in leaving South Australia was to ascertain if the production of fruit and vegetables could be carried on more profitably elsewhere than in his native State. Being convinced that it could be—an opion based upon reports received from various parts of the world—he sold up his property, with the full intention of settling elsewhere; but, after six months' throrough investigation, he has returned, satisfied that the rpospects of the sunny south are limitless, and that its people do not adequately appreciate the counrty of their birth, a heritage that, in Mr Skuse's opinion, cannot be equalled. He visited Italy, Great Britain, the United States, the eastern States of the Commonwealth. Nowhere, however, could he see such possibilities as those offered by South Australia, and he has determined to make a fresh start here.

Henley Beach Tragedies
Two Shooting Cases
A gardener's despair at the basence of rain apparently led him to take his life on Thursday. He was William Skuse, 39 years of age, and resided at Lockleys. According to a report furnished to te City Watchhouse authorities by Constable Cole, of Henley Beach, the body was found at 2.30 p.m. in a paddock belonging to Mr Sidney Kidman, at Henley Beach. It was lying on its right side, and a revolver was tighly clasped in the right hand, and there was a bullet wound in the forehead. Ealier in the morning Mrs Skuse had reported that her husband was missing. She stated that he had been greatly depressed at the state of his garden in consequence of the drought. Among other things he had from two to three acres of tomatoes under glass, and the condition of the plants worried him intensely. He walked about holding his head with his hands, and exclaimed:—"Oh! if it would only rain." The matter has been reported to the City Coroner.

A sad case of suicide was reported from Lake Gillear yesterday, the victim being Mr Edward Albert Skuse, 57 years of age, a well-known resident of the district. It appears that Mr Skuse, who has been an invalid for many years got possession of a gun belonging to an employee on Wednesday last, and placing the mizzle near his body, dicharged the weapon by pressing the reigger with a stick. The charge entered his chest causing instant death. The matter was reported by Constable Sainsbury to Mr W Ferguson J.P., Deputy Coroner who directed that an enquiry be held by a resident J.P. at Allansford. This was done by Mr G E Devenish, J.P., who returned a veridct of suicide.

The late Mr T Skuse

One of the best-known men amongst the gardening fraternity at Lockeys, Mr Thomas Skuse, died there early on Friday morning, in his 70th year, after a painful illness. Mr Skuse was a pioneer of tomato-growing under glass. In his early plantings the public did not relish this wholesome vegetable, but Mr Skuse, by selection and forcing his plants on with artificial aids, got the fruit early to perfection, and the people soon acquired the taste for it. Mr Skuse was rewarded for his skill and enterprise in building glass-houses by a good demand for tomatoes and consequen rise in prices. Other gardeners too the industry up, and made the tomato-growing business one of the leading branches of market gardening. All the sons of Mr Skuse have followed in the footsteps of their fahter, and between them have acres of tomatoes under glass. They supply a large proportion of the city trade. Mr Skuse inherited his ability as a gardener from his father, the late Thomas Skuse, sen., of Malmesbury, Wiltshire. Mr Thomas Skuse as a lad assisted him, and in 1863, when 17years old, came out to South Australia. He went straight to Findon, where he worked for Mr Leason on his farm, close to where he took up land a year later, and started gardening in experimental form. It was not long before his enterprise susceeded, and he had lived on this land ever since. He married at the age of 18 years Miss Mary Ann Curtis, the daughter of an early settler. The widow and family of five sons and four daughters surive, namely, Messrs Fred Skuse and Arthur Skuse (Lockleys); Mr John Skuse (Underdale); Mrs W Stevens (Lockleys), Mrs A Reweir (Sydney), Mrs R John (Lockleys), and Mrs R Richardson, of Kilkenny. There are 20 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Mr Skuse was a hardy toiler, with a genial spirit and indomitable perseverance under all difficulties, and he gained the respect and admiration of all.

In Memoriam
Skuse.—In loving memory of our darling baby, Norma Aileen, who died 8th December, 1923, aged 10 months and 3 weeks.
Just came to show how sweet a flower,
In Paradise would bloom.
Ere sin could harm , or sorrow fade,
Death came with friendly care,
The opening but to Heaven conveyed,
And made it blossom there.
Time does not alter love so time,
This day brings back one grief anew.
Inserted by her loving mother and father.

Robbed his Room Mate
James Alexander Skuse and Arthur Tucker were room mates, but an incident that happened on Saturday put an end to their intimacy. For Mr Skuse, looking through the window of their room, saw Tucker take a £1 note which belonged to him (Skuse) off a table. When he taxed Tucker with the theft his room mate denied all knowledge of the note. Skuse thereupon informed the police, and Tucker was arrested.
Those facts were related to Mr J J Leihy, Acting P.M., in the Police Court yesterday by Sub-inspector Loch, when Tucker appeared charged with having stolen the money. He pleaded guilty, and was fined £2, and ordered to make restitution of £1, in default two months' imprisonment, with hard labour. He was allowed 14 days to make payment.

The news of the tragic death of Agnes Skuse, writes a correspondent, wife of the Rev Harold Skuse, Methodist minister at Coopernook, on the Manning River, and formerly stationed at Kyogle, Rou, and Alstonville circuits, came as a shock to the ppeople of Kyogle, with whom the late Mrs Skuse was in close association during the three years she lived there. She came to Kyogle as a young bride and mother with her husband and entered very hearily into all departments of church work, and regularly conducted a class in the Sunday school. Possessing a very pleasing personality, she made many friends in the district, and the sincerest sympathy is expressed with the husband and little daughter in their great bereavement.
At the evening service in the Methodist Church on Sunday sympathetic reference was made to the tragedy of her death, she being killed whilst accompanying her husband to the annual conference of his church.
The deceased was the daughter of a well known western family and before her marriage conducted a very successful millinery business in a western town.
After leaving Kyogle, five years ago, she accompanied her husband to Alstonville, and after three years residence there went with her husband to Coopernook, where she resided up to the time of her death.

Jealous Youth Murders Pretty Girl -- Amazing Farewell Letter
(From our Queensland Representative).
"No one in this world realises what Bernice meant to me... I just can't go alone. I'd feel happy if I through Bernice and I would be together for ever, so I'm going to take her with me.... I'd love to be buried somewhere near Bernice...."
Dramatic words these! And they were written by a madly jealous young man in his last letter before he shot a pretty girl for whom he cherished a wild unreasoning passion.
In his blazer pocket the letter was discovered when his own body with the top of the head blown off—was found on the farm where the girl lived—and died.
"To all my friends who through I was happy," the Envelope was addressed.
For over a year before the double tragedy, pretty, happy-natured Bernice Skuse (20), living in the Toowoomba district of Queensland, and Kenneht McDowell (26), a farm worker, had been engaged. But, owing to the young man's amazing jealousy, the girl broke it off.
There had been nasty incidents at local dances—at which McDowell played the saxophone—and on Friday, October 7 came the threat that Bernice would not see Monday alive.
Faced up with that threat. McDowell expressed his regret and aksed the girl and her brother not to take any notice of it.
When the inquest was held last week the grim story of the actualy tragedy was told by an eye witness, a young man named John Bernard GRiffin, a friend of the Skuse boys, who was sitting the farm kitchen when the girl was shot. He was reading a paper. She was standing near, looking over his shoulder.
Suddenly the girl glanced towards the door and screamed. Next instant there was a shot and she fell to the floor. The shot put out the light and when Griffin rushed outside. He could see no trace of the Murderer.
"Had McDowell any cause to be jealous of you and the girl?" Det Sgt Elford asked. And Griffin's response was "No." The young man, accidentally, had been brought home by one of the Skuse boys to stay for a while. His acquaintance with the girl did not extend beyond a couple of weeks.
When Det Sgt Leford entered the kitchen of the Skuse home, he saw the girl on the floor. Part of her body lay in a pool of blood. Part of the face was blown away. He later saw McDowell's body, he informed the Coroner. Apparently the young fellow put the butt of the shotgun on the ground, leaned his right temple against the barrel, and fired, the left side of the head being blown off.
Both Sgt Elford and Sgt Martin expressed the opinion that McDowell was insane with jealousy at the time he shot the girl.
Sobbing as he spoke, Edward Skuse, the dead girl's father, said he heard a noice on the night of the tragedy, walked into the kitchen with a light in his hand and saw the horrifying sight of his daughter lying face downwards on the floor.
Hoping against hope, the father raised one of her arms. Then "Realised she was gone."
He, too, blamed "pure jealousy and nothing else" as the cause of the tragedy. And he, too, said there was nothing between his daughter and Griffin to account for jealousy.
But unreasoning jealousy had been torturing young McDowell for some time. And, finally, came that dreadul night when he sneaked onto the verandah at the girl's home, point the shotgun through the window and, just as she caught sight of it and screamed, fired.
In his mind the "World has nothing for me." and, in leaving it, he wanted to take the girl with him—a beautiful innocent victim of mad jealousy.
One last wish in his farewell letter, as wish that when they left this "hell on earth" their graves should be together, was not gratified. Their graves are well apart.

In Memoriam
Skuse—In loving memory of our dear brother and son, Claude Stuart, who passed away on April 15, 1938.
To-day recalls sad memories that fills our heart with pain,
To think the one we loved so dear will not return again;
When eveing shadows are falling, and I am sitting all along.
In my heart there comes a longing if you could only come home.
If we had all the world to give we'd give it, yes and more.
To see your cheery face, dear Claude,
Come smiling through the door.
